April 6 Warsaw

Breakfast in the hotel.

8.30                 Departure for Saint Stanislaw Kostka Church.

9.00                 Holy mass in Saint Stanislaw Kostka Church – parish of blessed Jerzy Popieluszko, where he is buried. Jerzy Aleksander Popiełuszko born Alfons Popiełuszko;  was a Polish Roman Catholic priest who became associated with the opposition Solidarity trade union in communist Poland. He was murdered in 1984 by three agents of the Security Service, who were shortly thereafter tried and convicted of the murder. Father Jerzy has been recognized as a martyr by the Roman Catholic Church and was beatified on 6 June 2010 by Cardinal Angelo Amato on behalf of Pope Benedict XVI. An alleged miracle attributed to his intercession, which could lead to his canonization, is now under investigation.Alfons was born on 14 September 1947 in Okopy, near Suchowola. After finishing school, he attended the priests' seminary at Warsaw. In 1966–1968, he served his army duties in a special force in Bartoszyce, aimed at keeping young men from becoming priests. This treatment had no effect on Alfons's beliefs, as, after finishing his army service, he continued his studies; however, the repeated punishments for his resistance affected his health for the rest of his life.Alfons, with seminary superiors' permission, changed his name from Alfons to Jerzy.

Father Jerzy was ordained a priest by Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński in May 1972.As a young priest he first served in Ząbki near Warsaw in 1972–1975.Afterwards, he served in parishes in Warsaw, which consisted of the common people as well as students. In 1981, Father Jerzy joined the workers, taking part with strikers in the Warsaw Steelworks. Thereafter he was associated with workers and trade unionists from the Solidarity movement who opposed the communist regime in Poland. He was a staunch opponent of the communist regime and, in his sermons, interwove spiritual exhortations with political messages, criticizing the government, expressing solidarity with the interned and motivating people to protest. During the period of martial law, the Catholic Church was the only force that could voice protest comparatively openly, with the regular celebration of Mass presenting opportunities for public gatherings in churches.

10.00               Meeting with the guide and visit of Warsaw: in 18th  and 19th century Warsaw was know as „Paris of the North”, but architecture changed a lot after Second World War. First of all the communist built many tipical to this period buildings: Palace of Sience and Culture – socrealist skycraper located in the city centre, now next to this building you can find modern economic and trade centre of Warsaw and MDM (Marszalkowska Dzielnica Mieszkaniowa – Marszalkowska Housing District) – one of tipical district built by communists in this period. From the historical point of view more important are other parts of the city: the Old City (Stare Miasto) with Royal Castle and situated just next to it the New City (Nowe Miasto) with his oldest building the Barbican. The 'must see' is as well Lazienki Park (Park Lazienkowski) with Palace on water (Palac na wodzie) and Polish famous composer Fryderyk Chopin monument, Nowy Swiat street, Krakowskie Przedmiescie street, St. Anna's church, University of Warsaw, birthplace of Madam Curie, Martyrdom Shrine and Holy Cross Church.

Faustina Kowalska (1905-1938), through Saint Faustina Lord Christ gave the message of the Divine Mercy to the Church and to the whole world. In 1943 Father J. Andrasz SI the Cracow confessor of Faustina blessed the first Divine Mercy Image painted by A. The image quickly became well-know for many graces, the number of pilgrims has grown            each year, considering also the pilgrims visiting the Sister Faustina's tomb. Very dynamic expansion of worship of the Divine Mercy was launched by the beatification of Sister's Faustina (18th of April 1993) and her canonisation (30th of April 2000), and also thanks to pilgrimages of John Paul II to Łagiewniki (1997 and 2002).
